Hansel Ford Auto Ad

We designed this ad to go in the "island position" of a classified page. This gave the advertiser the effect of purchasing a full page for a much better price! This idea helped pay for the color on the page and drew everyone's eye as they flipped the page and were almost "hit" with a truck. Every car in the liner ads behind the truck sold that weekend.

During 2000 there was huge growth in Sonoma County. Employees had their pick of jobs and employers had to work hard to attract new and better employees. Job Fairs were well received by employers and special sections about jobs in Sonoma County were popular.

I worked directly with Kendall-Jackson by phone, fax and email to get this ad out quickly. They were very satisfied with the results.

This ad is one that almost wasn't seen by the client.

I did a number of specs in the style requested by the salesperson for this ad. I did another (this one) because I liked it and I felt it said what they were trying to communicate even if it didn't look like the ads they usually ran. The salesperson took out the other ads but not this one because she didn't think that they would like it.

After not hearing back from the client the salesperson called to inquire. They said that they had been thinking of changing their image but were sure it was too late for another round of specs. She told them that she may have "just the thing." She took it by and it sold immediately. It was just what they were looking for!

A too successful campaign

The Ad Director and the HR Director wanted to create Help Wanted ads that would attract more attention in the classified section.

We ran a series of small color ads for single job descriptions and they were very well received.

We then ran our standard "all available jobs" ad but instead of using the standard shell we used this more attractive shell.

After two weeks the publisher pulled the ad. People that weren't looking for work noticed it too. It gave the impression that we had too many openings. We were attracting too much attention.

Yardbirds always purchased the back page of our Discover magazine. Their style is loud and colorful. My challenge was from the publisher (indirectly). "Make the Yardbirds ad fit the style of the magazine." I had to work with Yardbirds and they had to be satisfied first. (They are the client afterall).

After my success with the Discover ad many more ads were sent to me to be on the back page of editorial's babies. This is one from "50 who shaped our Century" magazine.

The Mountain Mandarin Festival bought the back page of a magaine and decided at the last minute that they should hire a graphic artist to design the ad.

I was given the date and a request to add a cake to represent their tenth anniversary.

This is my solution.
